Hancock (John) Grammar School (first) opens.

June 30, 1823

(June) It is located at 209 Hanover Street (then Middle Street). Mayor Josiah Quincy delivers the dedication address. Nathaniel K.G. Oliver and Peter McIntosh Jr. are the first headmasters. The first school built for the exclusive use of girls, it moves to a new building (second) on Richmond Place in 1848.*
